* Do-It-Yourself Scale Calibration Check
Here's an easy way to test the accuracy of your scales and see if they are anywhere near reality! All you need is some 1 gallon water jugs and maybe a 5 gallon water jug, with water in them. It's not scientific, but it should get you in the ballpark! 1 pound of water = .1198 gallons; so, 1 gallon of water = 1/.1198 = 8.3472 pounds Call it 8.35 lbs per gal. So:
1 gal. = 8.35 lbs. 2 gals. = 16.7 lbs. 3 gals. = 25.05 lbs. 4 gals. = 33.4 lbs. 5 gals. = 41.75 lbs.
Only use water for this, as different liquids have different weights per gallon.
By tieing different numbers of these bottles together and weighing them, you should be able to get a good idea if your scales are any good or not.
** How to measure a Redfish
The total length is the maximum length of the fish, with the mouth closed and the tail fin pinched together. The best way to obtain this length is to push the fish's snout up against a vertical surface with the mouth closed and the fish laying along a tape measure, then pinch the tail fin closed and determine the total length. Do NOT pull a flexible tape measure along the curve of the fish.
*** How to take a GOOD fish picture
First and foremost is the fish! Hold the fish out in front of you and fill the camera frame with the fish. Second is the fisherperson and they should be clearly in view holding the fish. Take the picture in tight with the fish and face of the person; no one cares about the feet of the person who caught the fish! Thirdly is the background. It's not so important, but action shots at the fishing location are more interesting than night shots in the yard after the fish has been on ice for 6 hours.
